Good to know

What is the best way to learn French as a second language?

The fastest progress comes from regular speaking practice with a qualified teacher who corrects gently and explains the grammar behind it. One-on-one FSL tutoring lets teens and adults focus on their own goal, whether that is core French at school, the DELF, travel or French for work, at their own pace.

Many learners study French for years in class and still freeze when it is time to speak. FSL, or français langue seconde (French as a second language), tutoring changes that by putting conversation at the centre. You may also see FLE, français langue étrangère (French as a foreign language), used for learners who live outside a French-speaking community. The goal is the same: French you can actually use.

  • Conversation practice on topics the learner cares about, so speaking becomes natural.
  • Grammar and verb tenses explained in plain English, then used right away.
  • Preparation for goals such as the DELF (levels A1 to B2) or a workplace French evaluation, where the teacher offers it.

How an FSL teacher helps

1

Talk first, then fix

Sessions open with conversation and the teacher notes errors to work on afterward, so confidence stays high.

2

Grammar that sticks

One rule at a time, practised in real sentences until it feels automatic.

3

Practice tied to the goal

Exam-style tasks for the DELF or role plays for work keep every session focused on what the learner needs.

Signs it is time for FSL support

Most families notice it at homework time or when a report card comes home.

Mother and son on a sofa looking at his report card together
01

Freezes when speaking

Your learner reads French well enough but goes silent when asked a question out loud.

02

Verb tenses feel random

The passé composé, imparfait and future tense get mixed up in writing and speech.

03

Slipping in core French

Core French marks are dropping and homework causes stress at home.

04

A goal with a deadline

A DELF exam, a job requirement or a move is coming, and French needs to improve.

Grades 7 and 8

Past and future tenses, adjective agreement, short paragraphs, oral presentations and listening to authentic French.
