A certified teacher helps your teen understand biology instead of only memorizing it. They connect terms to processes, from cell division to metabolism and genetics, and help with diagrams, lab reports, unit tests and final exams in the course your teen is taking.

Senior biology carries a heavy load of new vocabulary, and the processes behind it, such as cellular respiration, protein synthesis and homeostasis, are easy to memorize and hard to explain. Courses include Ontario's SBI3U, SBI3C and SBI4U, BC's Life Sciences 11 and Anatomy and Physiology 12, and Alberta's Biology 20 and 30.
Grade 12 biology is a common prerequisite for nursing, health sciences and life science programs, so the final mark often matters for applications.
Words with meaning
Your teen's teacher ties each new term to the process it describes, so it sticks.
Draw it, explain it
They use diagrams and flow charts so your teen can explain a process from start to finish.
Dissections and diagrams
Help labelling diagrams, writing up dissections and experiments, and reviewing each unit before the test.
Licensed teachers in good standing, including retired classroom teachers and ESL and FSL specialists.

Most families notice it at homework time or when a report card comes home.

Your teen can define the terms but can't explain how the process actually works.
Test questions that ask them to explain or apply an idea bring their marks down.
Punnett squares, inheritance patterns and probability questions leave them guessing.
They are aiming for nursing or health sciences, and Grade 12 biology is part of the admission requirements.
Biology is a subject of connected processes, and memorizing the terms is not the same as understanding how they fit together. Teachers are trained in pedagogy, the practice of teaching. They help your teen explain each process in their own words, then with the right vocabulary, while following your province's science curriculum.

Cells, genetics, evolution, diversity of living things, human systems, biochemistry, metabolism, molecular genetics, homeostasis and population dynamics, in courses such as Ontario's SBI3U and SBI4U, BC's Life Sciences 11 and Anatomy and Physiology 12, Alberta's Biology 20 and 30, Saskatchewan's Biology 30, Manitoba's Biology 30S and 40S, Nova Scotia's Biology 11 and 12 and New Brunswick's Biology 112 and 122.
Exams carry real weight in biology. Ontario now requires final exams in most high school courses, and in science the exam counts for 20% of the final mark in Grades 9 and 10 and 25% in Grades 11 and 12. Alberta's Biology 30 diploma exam counts for 30% of the final mark. Exam practice focuses on questions that ask students to apply a process to a new example.
A higher standard of tutoring
Teaching is a profession. Certified teachers are trained in how students learn, so they spot the gaps, adapt the explanation and build the skills your child needs to move forward with confidence.
