Your ID and your privacy

Why we ask for your government ID

Every educator is checked before they meet a student. Here's what we ask for, why we ask, and what families can and can't see.

What we check, and why

✓
Your ID confirms you're the teacher named on your certificate.
✓
We work with children, so every tutor is verified before a first lesson.
✓
Verification also prevents fraud and keeps your payments secure.

Parents never see your ID, email or home address. They see your photo, bio, certification, subjects and availability. For in-person lessons they see a general area, never your address.

Upload your ID through the platform only. We don't accept documents by email.

Certification

What it means to be a certified teacher in the Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories has no college of teachers. The Registrar of Teacher Certification, in the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), issues teaching certificates. A certified NWT teacher meets these four requirements.

Education

A degree and teacher education

A teacher education program from the NWT, or certification where you trained, typically a B.Ed. with at least 12 weeks of supervised student teaching.

Official source
Safety

A background check

An original vulnerable sector check dated within 90 days. To tutor with Connect Education, you also need a police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Official source
Also required

Job offer to apply

You need a teaching job offer in the territory to use the CertifiED NWT system, plus transcripts and statements of professional standing.

Official source
Good standing

Interim, then professional

Teachers start with an Interim Professional Teaching Certificate and receive a Professional Teaching Certificate after two years of successful teaching in the NWT. Retired? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Also welcome to apply

Supply teachers, registered ECEs and retired teachers tutor with us too. Here's what each needs.

Supply teachers

Occasional and long-term occasional teachers apply with the same certificate in good standing. Tutoring fits around the days you're called in.

Registered ECEs

Early childhood educators registered with their provincial ECE regulator, in good standing, are welcome, especially for early learning.

Retired teachers

Retired and no longer renewing your membership? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Most requested

The NWT has 49 schools in 33 communities, and the territory is moving from Alberta's curriculum to an NWT-adapted version of B.C.'s. That change brings questions. Common requests:

  • Math and literacy help as the new curriculum rolls out.
  • Grade 12 support for courses that still use Alberta diploma exams.
  • French homework for Immersion students and families in francophone schools.
  • Online lessons for students in small communities with few local tutors.

At a student's home or a library

In person means at the student's home or at a public library. If you're not comfortable going to a family's home, you can choose the library. In-person lessons depend on teachers living nearby, so most NWT tutoring is online, which works in every community with a good connection.

The NWT has 21 community libraries. Check your local library's hours and space before you plan a session.

Questions teachers ask

How much can I charge, and what does it cost to join?

You set your own rate. Joining is free. When you teach, a platform service fee of 25% of each session rate comes out of the amount charged, and it covers the platform, payments and admin, so you never chase an invoice.

Can I help students with the curriculum change?

Yes. If you know B.C.'s curriculum or Alberta's diploma courses, say so in your profile. Families look for teachers who can explain what's changing.

Are there in-person students outside Yellowknife?

Sometimes, but in smaller communities most families connect online. You can offer both and see what comes in.

Do I need a car to tutor in person?

No. Many teachers tutor online only, or meet families at a library branch they can reach by transit. You choose the areas you'll travel to, so you only get requests that work for you.

Can I tutor while teaching in an NWT school?

Yes, outside school hours. Don't tutor your own current students for pay, and check your education body's rules about outside work.

How long does approval take?

Most of the wait is the document check. Clear, current documents with the same legal name on each are the fastest route, and we'll let you know by email.
