A recent police check with a vulnerable sector check

Tip: use the same legal name on every document. It's the fastest way to approval.

One rule to know: don't tutor students you currently teach at school.

Your ID and your privacy

Why we ask for your government ID

Every educator is checked before they meet a student. Here's what we ask for, why we ask, and what families can and can't see.

What we check, and why

✓
Your ID confirms you're the teacher named on your certificate.
✓
We work with children, so every tutor is verified before a first lesson.
✓
Verification also prevents fraud and keeps your payments secure.

Parents never see your ID, email or home address. They see your photo, bio, certification, subjects and availability. For in-person lessons they see a general area, never your address.

Upload your ID through the platform only. We don't accept documents by email.

Certification

What it means to be a certified teacher in Alberta

Alberta has no college of teachers. Alberta Education's Office of the Registrar certifies teachers, and the Alberta Teaching Profession Commission handles discipline. A certified Alberta teacher meets these four requirements.

Education

A degree and teacher education

At least four years of university, including a recognized degree and a teacher preparation program with 48 semester hours of education courses and 10 weeks of supervised practicum.

Safety

A background check

A criminal record check with a vulnerable sector check, dated within six months. To tutor with Connect Education, you also need a police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Official source
Also required

Interim certificate first

New teachers start with an Interim Professional Certificate, valid for three years.

Official source
Good standing

Permanent certificate

After two years of full-time teaching, two successful evaluations against the Teaching Quality Standard and a school authority's recommendation, teachers can hold a Permanent Professional Certificate, which doesn't expire. Families can look teachers up on the public registry. Retired? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Also welcome to apply

Supply teachers, registered ECEs and retired teachers tutor with us too. Here's what each needs.

Supply teachers

Occasional and long-term occasional teachers apply with the same certificate in good standing. Tutoring fits around the days you're called in.

Registered ECEs

Early childhood educators registered with their provincial ECE regulator, in good standing, are welcome, especially for early learning.

Retired teachers

Retired and no longer renewing your membership? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Alberta has 324 library service points, from city branches to small-town libraries. Rules for booking rooms vary, so check with the library first.

Questions teachers ask

How much can I charge, and what does it cost to join?

You set your own rate. Joining is free. When you teach, a platform service fee of 25% of each session rate comes out of the amount charged, and it covers the platform, payments and admin, so you never chase an invoice.

Can I help students prepare for PATs and diploma exams?

Yes. Parents often ask for practice before the Grade 6 and 9 Provincial Achievement Tests and Grade 12 diploma exams. List the courses you've taught in your profile.

I hold an Interim Professional Certificate. Can I apply?

Yes, as long as your certificate is valid. Add your certificate type and the grades you teach to your profile.

Do I need a car to tutor in person?

No. Many teachers tutor online only, or meet families at a library branch they can reach by transit. You choose the areas you'll travel to, so you only get requests that work for you.

Do I have to travel to students' homes?

No. You can teach online only, or meet families at a library. Choose what you offer and change it any time.

How long does approval take?

Most of the wait is the document check. Clear, current documents with the same legal name on each are the fastest route, and we'll let you know by email.
