Your teaching certificate or ECE registration
Government-issued photo ID
A recent police check with a vulnerable sector check

Tip: use the same legal name on every document. It's the fastest way to approval.

One rule to know: don't tutor students you currently teach at school.

Your ID and your privacy

Why we ask for your government ID

Every educator is checked before they meet a student. Here's what we ask for, why we ask, and what families can and can't see.

What we check, and why

✓
Your ID confirms you're the teacher named on your certificate.
✓
We work with children, so every tutor is verified before a first lesson.
✓
Verification also prevents fraud and keeps your payments secure.

Parents never see your ID, email or home address. They see your photo, bio, certification, subjects and availability. For in-person lessons they see a general area, never your address.

Upload your ID through the platform only. We don't accept documents by email.

Certification

What it means to be a certified teacher in Canada

There's no national teaching license. Each province and territory certifies its own teachers: in Ontario it's the Ontario College of Teachers, in B.C. the Ministry of Education and Child Care under the BC Teachers' Council's standards, in Alberta the Office of the Registrar at Alberta Education, and in Saskatchewan the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board. Certified teachers usually meet these four requirements.

Education

A degree and teacher education

A university degree plus a teacher education program with a supervised practicum, such as a B.Ed. The exact credits vary by province.

Safety

A background check

Each province or territory sets its own criminal record check for certification. To tutor with Connect Education, you also need a police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Official source
Also required

A provincial certificate

A teaching certificate or license from a Canadian province or territory. Under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, a valid certificate from one can usually be recognized in the others, after you apply to transfer it.

Official source
Good standing

Keeping it valid

This varies: some provinces charge an annual fee or registration, while others issue a permanent certificate. Retired, or your status is now inactive? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Also welcome to apply

Supply teachers, registered ECEs and retired teachers tutor with us too. Here's what each needs.

Supply teachers

Occasional and long-term occasional teachers apply with the same certificate in good standing. Tutoring fits around the days you're called in.

Registered ECEs

Early childhood educators registered with their provincial ECE regulator, in good standing, are welcome, especially for early learning.

Retired teachers

Retired and no longer renewing your membership? You can still apply with a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

  • Practice before provincial tests, like EQAO in Ontario or the PATs and diploma exams in Alberta.
  • French Immersion homework support when parents don't speak French.
  • Students with an IEP, ADHD, autism or dyslexia, whose families want an experienced teacher.

At a student's home or a library

In person means at the student's home or at a public library. If you're not comfortable going to a family's home, you can choose the library. You choose the area you'll travel to, or teach online only and reach families anywhere in the country.

Public libraries are close to most Canadian families. In B.C. alone, there are 250 library service locations. Check your local branch's rules before you book a room.

Questions teachers ask

How much can I charge, and what does it cost to join?

You set your own rate. Joining is free. When you teach, a platform service fee of 25% of each session rate comes out of the amount charged, and it covers the platform, payments and admin, so you never chase an invoice.

I'm certified in one province. Can I tutor families in another?

Online, families across Canada can find your profile. List where you're certified and which curriculum you know best, so parents can choose the right fit.

Do I need to be teaching in a school right now?

No. Teachers who work full time, teach on call or have retired can all apply. What matters is your certification and a valid police check that includes a vulnerable sector check.

Do I need a car to tutor in person?

No. Many teachers tutor online only, or meet families at a library branch they can reach by transit. You choose the areas you'll travel to, so you only get requests that work for you.

Can I tutor students I teach at school?

No. Don't tutor your own current students for pay, and check your school board's rules about outside work.

How long does approval take?

Most of the wait is the document check. Clear, current documents with the same legal name on each are the fastest route, and we'll let you know by email.
