How to Tutor Grade 9 Math with the New Ontario Curriculum

Since September 2021, every Ontario Grade 9 student takes the same math course. The old split between academic (MPM1D) and applied (MFM1P) math is gone, replaced by one de-streamed course, MTH1W, that folds algebra, modelling, and financial literacy expectations once reserved for the academic stream into a single classroom for everyone (Ontario Ministry of Education). What Changed When Ontario De-Streamed Grade 9 Math

Streaming meant a student was sorted into an academic pathway aimed at university or an applied pathway aimed at college or the workplace, often before there was much evidence to base that choice on. Ontario ended the split for math first, starting with students entering Grade 9 in September 2021, and MTH1W remains the current curriculum for 2025-2026.

The results are improving but still mixed. On the EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, 58 percent of students met the provincial standard in 2024-2025, up from 54 percent the year before (EQAO, released December 2025). That is real progress, but a large share of any tutoring roster is still working below the standard, in a course that no longer separates students by pathway.

What Does the De-Streamed Grade 9 Math Curriculum (MTH1W) Actually Cover?

MTH1W is organized into six strands: Number, Algebra, Data, Geometry and Measurement, Financial Literacy, and a Social-Emotional Learning strand woven through the other five. Algebra now includes coding and linear and non-linear relations for every student, not only those once streamed into academic math (Ontario Ministry of Education).

A few of these strands are new territory even for teachers who taught the old academic or applied courses: coding sits inside Algebra, financial literacy is its own strand, and mathematical modelling, turning a real situation into a data-based prediction, runs through Data as a full expectation.

Where Grade 9 Math Students Tend to Get Stuck

Tutors and classroom teachers who have taught MTH1W consistently point to the same pinch point: the algebra strand's linear and non-linear relations move faster than the old Grade 8 course prepared most students for, since that content once sat mostly in the academic stream. A student comfortable with numeric work can still stall the moment a word problem asks them to represent a real situation as an equation or a graph. Financial literacy and data-modelling tasks trip up a different group, students who can follow a formula but have not built one from a real scenario before.

None of this means a student is behind in a way that needs fixing first. It means your early sessions are better spent finding which strand, and which expectation inside it, is the actual gap, rather than reteaching the whole course.   4. Ahead of an EQAO window, January for semester one or June for semester two, build in light familiarity with the format without teaching to the test.
